Now that we’re heading into the second month of 2020, I really wanted to check in to discuss those resolutions you made.
We ALL know that most of us fall back on the old “New Year, New Me” stuff, but aside from losing weight, eating better, and making more money, what actionable resolutions did you make?
Did you use a specific dollar amount when you said you wanted to make more money?
Did you write down how much “more time” you were going to spend with your family?
Heck, did you write down how much weight you were going to lose?
A lot of folks don’t, and I’ll tell you why…
It’s the hardest thing most of us can do…
It’s requires real thought. There’s not a big difference between 20 and 25 pounds on this side of being out of shape, but for those of us just getting ready to start, every pound seems “hard.”
Just like every extra thousand dollars.
Or every school function where the kids are playing.
Let me tell you, as an entrepreneur, you’ve got to simply claim that goal and be ready to achieve it.
I was having this conversation with a client a few weeks ago and they brought up what I thought was a really keen observation: Most people don’t want to set specific goals because they are afraid of missing them.
I’d never looked at it like that, but I see that he was …. In a way at least … right.
You can’t fail if you don’t try.
You also can’t succeed.
Oh, sure, you can make enough – to buy a pretty good car, to spend some time with your family, to take a decent vacation.
…But in a world that is already watered down substantially and that seems to only emphasize “doing what you love,” I think we’ve allowed ourselves to fall into what Michael E. Gerber of The E-Myth Revisited calls “the comfort zone.”
In 2020, I challenge ALL of us to get out of it and make real progress into achieving goals that will not only give you more, they’ll also make you work harder, smarter, and more efficiently than you’ve ever done before.
With all that in mind, I wanted to share with you one specific way you can recapture some of that time we all feel like we waste every week.
For starters, for the next two weeks, I want you to track the time you spend on social media, You Tube, and “checking” emails. Just use your phone’s stopwatch capability or enable a screen time tracker from the “Settings” page.
I think you’ll be surprised and …. Ashamed? Shocked? Years ago, we used to hear how much television Americans watched, but those televisions were only in our homes, never in our offices. Today, the “television” is in our pockets and guess what?
Some of the best marketers in the world are figuring out how to keep us distracted.
So, for the next two weeks, track the time you spend NOT working towards your goals. I think you’ll be surprised at how quickly building the right consumption habits in your digital life can allow you to easily reclaim time you can spend to achieve those goals and resolutions we’ve been talking about.
